Manchester’s Tech Scene

Manchester is the number one tech location outside of London and is home to some of the fastest growing tech companies in the UK, such as LIMA, SteamaCo and Sorted, as well as being the second home of global industry leaders Barclays, Microsoft, Google, Cisco and AccessPay.

The new IHS Markit Tech Hub is based in 1 Peter’s Square, right in the heart of the city and just a 10 minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly. The local area is home to KMPG, Ernst and Young, CBRE, Handelsbanken, Klarna and Amazon to name a few.

Living in Manchester

More and more technology professionals are being drawn to roles in Manchester because of the huge savings in living costs compared to those in London. On average, a one bedroom apartment would cost you 50% less in Manchester compared to the same size apartment in London. The area is also cheaper when it comes to groceries, as the average shopping basket will total around 4% less than a grocery shop in London. Public transport is also much cheaper in Manchester with the average season ticket costing around £54 per month to travel around the city

Things to Do in Manchester

IHS Markit’s office is located in the heart of Manchester, so rest assured that you will never be out of things to do when you slip out of the office for your lunch break. Local favourites include Sinclairs Oyster Bar, street food at Spinningfields and if you’re feeling flush, Mana, Manchester’s one and only Michelin starred restaurant.

Manchester is also a hotbed for sports, with either Manchester City and United playing each weekend, local team Salford City FC providing League 2 entertainment and the Old Trafford Cricket ground playing host to international First-Class cricket, along with local favourites Lancaster Cricket Club. You’ve also got Super League team Salford Red Devils if you’re looking for a rugby fix and the Greater Manchester Run, one of UK’s most popular 10km running races.

If nightlife is more your thing there’s some great music venues including Albert Hall and Gorilla, plus clubs like Bijou and Sankeys.

If you’re feeling homesick and fancy visiting the Capital for the weekend, you can reach London within 4 hours when travelling from Manchester Piccadilly train station. IHS Markit’s office is also conveniently located around a 10 minute walk from this mainline station, making your commute a breeze.

With four major train stations (Picadilliy, Victoria, Oxford Road and Deansgate), commuting in to the centre from the surrounding areas is a breeze, plus with the Manchester Metrolink tram system, travel throughout the city centre is easy and convenient.
